‘Funny Girl’ Revival Is Postponed, Its Producers Say

(Dave Itzkoff, ArtsBeat, The New York Times) The producers of a Broadway-bound revival of “Funny Girl,” that was to star Lauren Ambrose as Fanny Brice and was to be directed by Bartlett Sher, announced on Thursday night that the production had been postponed, citing economic difficulties.

Bob Boyett, a producer of the revival, said in a statement: “We have made the extremely difficult decision today to postpone our production of ‘Funny Girl.’ Given the current economic climate, many Broadway producing investors have found it impossible to maintain their standard level of financial commitment. Our desire to produce ‘Funny Girl’ on the scale it deserves required a capitalization of $12 million making it one of the most expensive revivals in Broadway history.”

Plans for this “Funny Girl” revival, which would have originated at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles before transferring to Broadway, were announced in 2010.
