$25 Million Worth of Vintage Instruments Languish in a Michigan Vault

A hundred and fifteen years ago, or thereabout, a Detroit businessman named Frederick Stearns gave the University of Michigan an array of musical instruments. In a letter written just before the donation, Stearns made explicit his aims for the collection: “Under no consideration whatever however would I turn the collection over (to) the university except with the understanding that it should be immediately housed and installed.” Technically, you can make the case that the collection is still being housed, but installed?
