Ai Weiwei’s “Fragments” Will Spend The Spring in Washington

Ai Weiwei became a kind of artistic cause celebe last year for reasons that had almost nothing to do with his art. You might remember something about his being detained for three months by Chinese authorities? Something about his questioning their record on human rights, which ooh they were not happy about, and then they sent the tax man after him? Those troubles seem to finally be receding into the distance, although Ai’s still on, ah, country arrest, I guess you could say, until June? He can’t leave China until then, I mean. That notwithstanding, the focus is shifting back to his work, finally, and his gigantic Fragments will be installed at the Sackler Gallery this spring as part of the gallery’s 25th-anniversary celebration.
