Christo Gets Federal Approval to Wrap Arkansas River

(Kelly Crow, Speakeasy, The Wall Street Journal) It looks like artist Christo will (finally) get to wrap Colorado’s Arkansas River.

On Monday, a federal government agency agreed to let New York-based artist Christo Javacheff, who is known professionally by his first name, proceed with his plan to temporarily suspend flat panels of silvery fabric in several sections along a 42-mile-long stretch of Colorado’s Arkansas River.

The artist, who with his late wife Jeanne-Claude has wrapped entire buildings and dotted Central Park in colorful fabric, has spent over $7 million and at least 18 years working out the logistics and seeking permits for what could be his final art project, called “Over The River.”

Once the artwork is installed, likely by 2013, Christo has said he hopes the public will drive alongside his mirror-like ribbon or raft underneath it.
