Clyfford Still Museum set to open in Denver on Friday

Abstract expressionist Clyfford Still left a short but detailed will when he died in 1980, saying that his work was “like a symphony in which each painting has its part” and stipulating that the work remain unseen by the public until a U.S. city agreed to build a museum dedicated exclusively to him, with further specifications against lending, selling or donating a single painting from the collection. After a rather spirited bidding war between more than twenty U.S. cities, Denver ultimately pulled the prize, and now thirty-one years later, the seal on the new Clyfford Still Museum gets officially broken tomorrow.
