The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s annual “Classical Roots” concerts are imminent, and this year’s program has a decided emphasis on African-American spirituals, centering around William Levi Dawson’s 1934 Negro Folk Symphony, which derives much inspiration from spirituals. There will be a touch of levity, however; the program also includes “Dreamers, Dancers and Presidents”, a piece by Daniel Bernard Roumain based on the time Barack Obama danced on the Ellen show.
