Ralph Ellison apparently went to his grave convinced that Invisible Man could never work as anything but a novel, and he may well have had a point – that book, while astonishingly brilliant, is knots and loops within knots and loops, and each layer just leads to another. (That said: read it, if you haven’t.) But you don’t know unless you try, and so this week sees the debut of Oren Jacoby’s stage adaptation of Ellison’s monumental book at the Court Theatre at U of C.
