From FAST to CAST for MIT

Conventional wisdom – by which we mean, cliche – to the contrary, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has long had a deep and potent interest in the intersection of art and technology. There are rocket scientists and poets alike up across the river in Cambridge. Take, for example, last year’s F.A.S.T. Festival, which dotted Boston with all sorts of neat light shows and installations and other things that the sorts of people that make it into M.I.T. do in their spare time. Like a robotic opera, about which your guess is as good as ours. Now, thanks to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, M.I.T.’s got a cool million and a half bucks to play with, which they plan to turn into a new, permanent Center for Art, Science and Technology.
