She was there in January for a bit, with a trio that included Esperanza Spalding, but this week’s residency is all about Geri Allen, who has been a big, big player in New York jazz for about thirty years now. Allen’s recorded with Ornette Coleman, Betty Carter, Tony Williams – acres of heavy NYC jazz figures – and she shows no signs of slowing down, not even a bit, not this year, no way. The spring keeps rolling on, the days are getting longer, the nights are getting warmer, and there isn’t much better on a New York City evening in May than a little jazz and a cold drink. Forget my weak descriptions; just poke around a bit online for “Geri Allen”. You’ll see. (FULL ARTICLE: Larry Blumenfeld, Wall Street Journal)
