Herb Ritts has been gone nearly a decade, succumbing to pneumonia on Boxing Day 2002, but it’s been close to sixteen years since a museum mounted a major exhibition of his photography. That was at the MFA Boston in 1996, and regardless of some vociferous criticism, the show broke all sorts of records for attendance. Ergo, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles is going to give a new show a try, beginning early in April, comprising nearly ninety Ritts photographs, alongside a healthy selection of his magazine work.
