On the strength of The House of Blue Leaves, you’d be forgiven for thinking that John Guare might be a lunatic. The play runs bathetically, all over the map, from high comedy to deep, thoughtful realism to goofy, slapstick mania, the sort of thing you’d expect from a play featuring a deaf mistress, a pair of nuns and a photo album featuring pictures of food. Also, the Pope, sort of. If any of this intrigues you – and it probably should – Isis Productions is staging it at the Walnut Street Theatre through the 25th. Ticket prices are reasonable. Go laugh, why not? (Toby Zinman, Philadelphia Inquirer)
