Jazz is the Fountain of Youth, Apparently

Natalie Keyssar/The Wall Street Journal

Last July, a New Orleans jazzman named Lionel Ferbos celebrated his 100th birthday with a concert at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe on Decatur Street. This in itself would have been rather remarkable, but this was just another gig for Lionel, who continues to play the Palm Court every Sunday as he steams toward 101. Now all we’ve got to do is get Les Lieber down there to gig with him, because sax and penny whistle virtuoso Lieber is about to hit the century mark himself, and, like Lionel Ferbos, Les Lieber still gigs weekly in New York, every Friday at noon at the Players Club on Gramercy Park South. Les is making noise about giving it up, though, so if you’re in New York and are inclined to spend some time with a living jazz legend, swing by while you can.
