Kermit Ruffins Has Got Himself a Speakeasy

If you’re looking around for someone to be, you could do far, far worse than to be Kermit Ruffins, who is just about the living embodiment of the city of New Orleans. He’s in Treme, he co-founded the Rebirth Jazz Band and now leads the Barbecue Swingers, he likes a little beer now and then, and he’s been known to roll his smoker out in front of Vaughn’s after his set and hand out red beans and rice and barbecue to whomever’s hanging around. Now he’s got himself a restaurant, Kermit’s Treme Speakeasy, on Basin St., although it’s less a restaurant than a hangout, forty seats, a low stage, good, cheap eats and some quality jazz.
