We should maybe clarify here, a bit: the Industry is not sort of a company, it is most definitely a company, run by the ex-head of the NYC Opera’s VOX Series and a former professional opera singer. What the Industry is not is a standard opera company, gearing up for Puccini or Britten or one of those bold-faced traditionalist names that almost invariably make you think, “Should I rent a tux?” The Industry does something that their director calls hyperopera; it’s kind of a cross between opera, theater and performance art and is immersive and hyper-realistic and there’s bean bag chairs. Also, a cemetery. And voodoo. This, at least, is what’s featured in the Industry’s debut show, Crescent City , which debuts tomorrow night at 8 at Atwater Crossing and runs through the 27th. They’ll even let you walk along the edge of the stage if you want. The Industry is trying a lot of new things, here. (FULL ARTICLE: Scott Timberg, Los Angeles Times)
