You might recognize Chris Burden’s name without realizing it; he’s the guy that had himself nailed to the back of a Volkswagon in 1974 (Trans-fixed) and had an assistant shoot him in the arm in 1971 for a piece called, why not, Shoot. He’s calmed down significantly since then, but he doesn’t seem to have suffered any lack of ambition; his gargantuan new installation at LACMA, Metropolis II, is already opening eyes by virtue of its bulk, its sprawl, and, yes, its poetry.
