Magnifying Glasses Required at Gallery 309’s Justin Duerr Exhibit

Justin Duerr’s squarely in the “outsider art” tradition of Henry Darger, the Reverend Howard Finster, and whomever it is that lays (laid?) the Toynbee tiles in various cities in North and South America, and speaking of Toynbee, because we might as well – those things are odd, hey? – Duerr’s enough of an obsessive about the tiles that he was tapped to narrate last year’s Toynbee documentary, Resurrect Dead, which went over a treat at the Sundance Festival and is now on DVD, iTunes, and the Epix Movie Channel. (Call your cable provider. Or don’t. Up to you.) His new Gallery 309 show, Stranger Things Have Never Happened, is a showcase for drawings of a style so intricate that, no exaggeration, the gallery is providing magnifying glasses so that attendees can catch all of the detail. The man has the steadiest hands in Philadelphia, apparently. 309’s also going to screen the Toynbee doc twice during the show’s run, this Friday and again on the 27th.
