“Merrily” Rolls Into Cincinnati’s Playhouse in the Park

Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along was enough of a disaster that it completely killed the Sondheim/Hal Prince relationship for more than two decades (they found their mojo again with 2003’s Bounce, but this was after Prince had made a mint or two from directing Phantom of the Opera, so the stakes weren’t quite as high.) Cincinnati’s Playhouse in the Park cares not for your intimations of doom, however, and is giving Merrily a full, staged airing this month, beginning tonight. (Also, the show’s been revised just a bit since it died on Broadway thirty years ago.) (Adam Hetrick, Playbill)
