They ran it up the flagpole before, in 2004, but Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers is one of those operas that’s flashy and exotic and doesn’t require the viewer to strain in order to follow what’s going on, so the Michigan Opera Theatre’s brought it back to the boards beginning this Saturday at 7:30 at the Detroit Opera House. This of course is not the exotica of, say, Esquivel!, but still, The Pearl Fishers is set in ancient Ceylon (Sri Lanka, now), and it’s spring and getting warmer, so embrace the urge.
