Mike Kelley’s Last Project, “Mobile Homestead”, Now in Limbo

Mike Kelley was one of those artists that millions of people know without realizing it; anyone who’s ever seen the cover of Sonic Youth’s Dirty has seen a piece by Mike Kelley. Kelley died the other day at 57 in what’s been reported as a suicide, and among the many other sad parts of the story is the now-uncertain status of Kelley’s “Mobile Homestead” public art project. Intended to be a scale replica of Kelley’s childhood home, only the facade has been finished so far, and though Kelley left detailed instructions for its completion, there are the usual uncertainties.
