Does this even qualify as art? Whatever, it’s awesome, and just another example of the greatness and creativity of the tremendous city of New Orleans. And so: Dappling the town, there are seventeen evacuation checkpoints, at which people who may not be able to get themselves to safety can wait in the event of a mandatory evacuation. The checkpoints weren’t marked by much, though – a little sign, that was pretty much it. Reps from FEMA and Homeland Security just wanted bigger signs. New Orleans, however – specifically a man named Robert X. Fogarty – had a different idea. Now all the checkpoints are going to be marked by one of those ten-foot-tall metal guys over there. Man, that’s a great town. (Dave Thier, The New York Times)
