Jazz festivals in America are kind of caught in a quandary at the moment, nestled between jazz purists who have made noise about, for example, Cee-Lo Green and Bruce Springsteen headlining at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and the desire to, uh, make enough money to keep staging the festival. Which seems reasonable; take a look at the NOLA JazzFest lineup. There is a lot of jazz being offered. The Newport Jazz Festival has no interest in playing footsie with a lot of bleedin’ pop singers, though. Pat Metheny and Kurt Elling are more Newport’s speed. (Providence Journal staff)
