‘Occupy’ the Spencer Museum? Sort of.

At first glance, it looks like KU’s Spencer Museum of Art has, in fact, been taken over by the forces of “Occupy Everything and Damn the Man, etc.” Right out front, there’s a big nylon sign that says “Stop Staring, Comrades, the Spectacle is Everywhere”. (Inside, among all the other paraphernalia, there’s a toilet seat with the Bank of America logo on it, which is just delicious.) This is not, however – and the toilet seat might just have given it away a bit – protest, per se; it’s a look at protest, a dissection of it, by Chinese artist Chen Shaoxiong, who has been at the university since March holding workshops and lectures and overseeing a small artistic revolution and now has Prepared: Strategies for Activists curated to perfection and up, for free viewing, naturally, at the Spencer through July 22.
