Untrained art, instinctual art, outsider art, there’s a dozen terms for it and no clear definition; if you want to get technical about it, Van Gogh was “untrained”. That said, there’s a certain commonality to work that rides around under the “outsider” moniker, and Accidental Genius: Art from the Anthony Petullo Collection, the new exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum, proves that, in its way.
