This is a good thing, because the Philadelphia Orchestra desperately needs a little stability. With luck it will come via the rock-solid leadership of one Allison Vulgamore, who was hired in 2010 to try and rescue the fortunes of the then-flailing symphony. Which is not to suggest that they’re all sorts of beflowered now – there are no fields of clover yet – but things are starting to pick up. Here’s the thing to remember about classical music: it was written to be heard live. No recordings really do it justice. (Peter Dobrin, Philadelphia Inquirer)
