Prefatory to Tanglewood, Berkshire Lyric Undertakes Jenkins’ ‘Requiem’

All right, it’s the ninth of May, and Tanglewood doesn’t get going until late June, so calling this prefatory is maybe just perhaps a slight exaggeration, but: Karl Jenkins’ Requiem is a big, monolithic beast of a work attended by all sorts of messianic and apocalyptic overtones (large chunks of the work were used in the Matrix trilogy, for instance) and, if you’re in the right frame of mind it’s a pretty unsettling piece of work, albeit one with moments of tremendous beauty. So, if you’re feeling inclined to stare into the maw of self, surrounded by the chimes of eternity, you should probably know that the venerable Berkshire Lyric, which has been bringing the choral goodness to the Berkshires for half a century, is doing the whole of the Requiem at St. Joseph’s Church in Pittsfield on May 20th.
