Public Theater No Longer So Daring

The Public Theater made its name on the sort of daring, cutting-edge shows that are in vanishingly short supply these days, both in New York and elsewhere, and the next two shows on the theater’s docket – a summer revival of Into the Woods and a musical version of Edna Ferber’s novel Giant – will do very little to quell the suspicion that the Public’s completely given itself over to commercial concerns, and while there’s nothing at all wrong with making a profit, the lament is that the Public was once one of those theaters that pushed the envelope and trusted that the audience would follow.
