The Chilean writer-director Raul Ruiz, who began as a dissident, experimental filmmaker in his home country, was forced into exile in Paris after the Pinochet coup in 1973, and capped his career working with such mainstream Hollywood figures as John Malkovich (in 2006’s Klimt), died this week in Paris at age 70 after a long illness.
