About twenty-five years ago, there was a brief period of time when the Pentecostal tradition of snake handling was sort of oddly mainstream. At least, people were talking about it. The late Eighties must have been boring. Anyway, said tradition is still around; they’re just not talking about it on tabloid newsmagazines any longer, which is probably the way that the devout always wanted it to be. But it’s still pretty fascinating, and Richmond’s Gallery 5 can prove it: “With Signs Following”, a documentary and multimedia installation by the Richmond-based Kate Fowler and Mark Strandquist, opens tomorrow night at 6.
