The shirtless men (and clothed women) who comprise the City Ballet of San Diego will take George Balanchine for a whirl this weekend, staging a three-headed tribute to the master, Bravo! Balanchine, at Spreckels Theatre beginning tomorrow evening at eight. Balanchine, who even the coarsest rogue knows dragged ballet out of its child-like, storybook past and into the modern world, still stands astride the dance world like a monolith, and City Ballet’s kind of taking a chance with this one, featuring Balanchine’s notoriously challenging Agon as one of the three parts of the tribute.
