The San Francisco Opera’s run a couple of substantial budget deficits recently, meaning that they’re just like every other opera company in America. (Ah, I’m sure there are some exceptions. The Metropolitan Opera, that’s probably still in the black.) SFO General Director David Gockley spits at artistic sacrifice, however; he fully intends to bring the opera’s budget as close to balance as possible while still putting forth an ambitious 2012-13 season.
