Los Angeles-based artist Mark Grotjahn spent a lot of time on the slopes, both in his youth and during his undergraduate years at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and now he’s made a slightly more permanent mark on a handful of Aspen’s ski spots with a quartet of bronze sculptures based on his 2006 show at LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art, “Painting in Tongues”. Perched high on metal poles, the sculptures sort of loom, both menacing and reassuring; a more down-to-earth sculpture, the fifth in the series, is at the Aspen Art Museum as part of a survey of Grotjean’s work. So, go, ski, and then celebrate your survival with a hot toddy and a wander through the AAM. (FULL ARTICLE: Jori Finkel, Culture Monster, Los Angeles Times)
