‘Smash’ might spawn Broadway musical, provided people watch it

NBC has a new show lined up, Smash, that’s set to debut on February 6 and is so meta that it’s like a Russian nesting doll. Consider: The plot is about a bunch of theater types writing a Marilyn Monroe musical – but it’s actually written by a bunch of real theater types (some of whom were behind Hairspray and the unfairly reviled Catch Me If You Can) who’ve written over a dozen songs about Marilyn, and if the show is successful (the television show, that is) they have plans, eventually, to take the musical that’s being written for the TV show to Broadway.
