Surprisingly, Lots of Men Are Going to See ‘Magic/Bird’

Sorry, did we say “surprisingly”? We meant “obviously.” Yes, sound the horns of revelation: a play about two legendary basketball players is attracting a crowd that might not otherwise be all that interested in heading down to Theater Row. Okay, we’re feeling a little sarcastic today. It is, indubitably, a positive sign that lots of dudes, many of them wearing Celtics and Lakers jerseys, are streaming down to the Longacre to see Magic/Bird, which is by all accounts a quality show – we should remember that this is the same production team that also did last year’s Lombardi, which not only also attracted a fairly unique audience for Broadway but was nominated for a Tony – and, what the hey, if it stays successful it might even lead to a whole raft of new shows about eminent sports figures, which could get very interesting.
