Taft Museum Gets Fifty Masterworks From the Wadsworth For the Summer

The Wadsworth Atheneum has been around for so long that when it opened, people were probably still using the word “atheneum” in conversation. (Whereas now this program, here, that I’m typing into right now, doesn’t even recognize it as a word.) To add a little gravity and perspective: when the Wadsworth opened its doors, Abraham Lincoln was still a country lawyer. As one might expect of a museum that is verging on two hundred years old, the Wadsworth has built itself a pretty fine permanent collection, fifty thousand pieces or so, and, not wanting to seem greedy, has lain 50 masterworks on the Taft Museum for the summer; the show, Old Masters to Impressionists, got underway this morning and runs through September 16.
