The Journey: The Story of Your Life

Arts at Saint John’s, Outré Theatre Company, and LLF Productions are proud to announce an artistic collaboration that spans the Southeast: the original musical The Journey: The Story of Your Life by Kristen Long and C. Stefan Morrisette. The Journey returns to South Florida, where it was first seen as an Outré concert production in January 2013, in a full production helmed by composer/writer Kristen Long and Outré Managing Director Sabrina Lynn Gore.

Starring powerhouse local performers such as Reggie Whitehead and Ann Marie Olson, this rock/reggae/jazz/funk musical transports us to New Orleans, where the streets are washed with alcohol and dreams, and introduces us to the Bum, an unlikely griot who weaves stories like enchantments. Our narrator plucks from the smoke the stories of five individuals whose lives and desires irrevocably collide on these cobblestones amidst the buskers and street performers.

Since The Journey was first introduced three years ago at Outré, it has been featured at the New Orleans Fringe Festival, where it played to standing-room-only crowds at Café Istanbul. More recently, Long and Morrisette were invited to present a portion of the show at the TRU Voices Musical Theatre Workshop in Manhattan.

Creator Kristen Long emphasizes the show’s focus on the choices that we all make. “The Journey is about dreamers, lovers, hopefuls, achievers, even losers,” she says. “We all have a story. We all have a truth. How’s it written? That’s up to you.” This collision between fate and free will – set against the backdrop of poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, and abuse – provides the spine of the play. In the end, Long tells us, “fate is only a matter of the choices we make.”

The Journey: The Story of Your Life runs January 21 through January 30, 2016, with performances at 7 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Performances will be at Arts at St. John’s, 4760 Pine Tree Drive in Miami Beach.  The Journey contains strong language, adult situations, and violence, and is recommended for mature audiences. General admission tickets are $28, with seniors and students at $20 and VIP tickets available for $38.
