“Their Eyes Were Watching God” To Be Live Radio Play

Zora Neale Hurston’s magisterial novel Their Eyes Were Watching God turns 75 this year, and in doing so causes us to reflect on just how goddamn long it’s been since the Art Deco Thirties and the birth of modernism. (Get off my lawn.) Hurston’s novel is a landmark of both African-American and women’s literature and one of the more noted works to emerge from the Harlem Renaissance, and at the end of the month, WNYC and WQXR will broadcast a live radio play, adapted from the novel, from their shared downtown Greene Space.
