The traditional beginning to the winter film awards season, the Gotham Independent Film Awards, split its top prize this year between Terrence Malick’s impressionistic and virtually indescribable The Tree of Life (which you may recall befuddled some theatergoers enough that a few theaters around the country posted notices to the effect of: this is not a standard film, and you cannot have your money back if you don’t like it because not enough things explode) and Mike Mills’ bittersweet comedy/drama Beginners.(FULL ARTICLE: John Carucci, AP)
