The Washington National Opera took a brave stab at doing the entirety of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen in 2009, getting through Siegfried, the third opera in the tetralogy, before running short of funds and having to toss Gotterdammerung out to the San Francisco Opera. That was before they were playing with Kennedy Center money. Now, thanks to that merger, the WNO will, you bet, no doubt, do the entire Ring cycle – in 2016, granted, but who’s counting?
