Wynton Marsalis, Now 50, Takes up Residency at Symphony Center

Wynton Marsalis has been one of the leading lights of American jazz for so long that it’s kind of difficult to believe that he just turned 50 last October. Putting the lie to that increasingly irrelevant Fitzgerald quote about there being no second acts in American lives (maybe not for you, Fitzy, you poor thing), Marsalis is, if anything, increasing his activity as time goes on: he continues to head Jazz at Lincoln Center and tour with the JaLC Orchestra, he’s never stopped composing, and he has that new cultural correspondent position with CBS, to boot. Dude still swings like a pendulum, too, evidence of which will likely be in ample supply at Symphony Space in Chicago this weekend, where Marsalis will lead the JaLC Orchestra through a trio of concerts this Friday and Saturday.
