The Baltimore Concert Opera seeks to present works in an unadorned style more akin to oratorio than to traditional, fully-staged opera. The intent is to focus the audience’s attention on the voice first and foremost. English supertitles accompany all the performances. Lyric Opera Baltimore’s inaugural season in 2011-12 coincides with renovations technical improvements made to the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric. “Vivente” means “alive” or “animated.” And this now-teenage company definitely lives up to its name and slogan—“intimate, innovative, in English: opera you can get into”—in a decidedly unstuffy manner. Thus a recent Facebook entry noted, “Opera Vivente is translating its ass off. Yes, opera companies have asses. They’re just normally referred to as directors.
