Santa Fe International Folk Art Market

July 13 – 15, the largest global pop up market comes to town.  Part shopping fest, global eatery, and cultural + world music extravaganza, The International Folk Art Market captures large interest (last year 20,000 people descended on Museum Hill just for this event).  To promote some continuity, the city of Santa Fe hosts an entire week dedicated to International Folk Art. Of the many …more…

Live Music…and Yoga?

We have all heard the remarks about Santa Fe being the land of seekers, usually mentioned as a put-down. Granted, there is a fairly large segment of the population that fits into the yoga practicing, mantra sayin’, retreat going, equinox/solstice detoxifying, macrobiotic/vegan/fair trade eating group.  (And by the way, full disclosure here: I fit into most of that category myself). Yet, there are times when seekers overlap with art folk.   …more…

Art in the Library

You stumble through the library, city after city, and it’s more or less the same old same old:  a bunch of books and computers.  Right? Wrong.  In Santa Fe, The City Different, home to many things art, the Main branch (situated in the Plaza and steps from art galleries, storefronts and Native artisans selling their wares at the Governor’s Palace) hosts some tasty eye art food every month.

On this particular …more…

Slow Art Day

It started with food, and has finally reached the world of art.  Yes, the global movement of all things slow is happening today, ala Slow Art Day.  Of the 101 venues around the world, Axle Contemporary and SITE Santa Fe play host to this celebration where the creative boundaries and lines are blurred between “the people who make art and the people who look at it.”  For the Slow Art …more…

The Lensic

*Sigh*  Where do I even begin with this writer’s official letter of love to the Lensic?  I suppose, in the beginning…

Right.  I grew up (not in Santa Fe) in a bio home and blissed out community of artists, musicians, dancers and avid readers/writers/scribes/scholars.  I have always known that the arts in general, and artists in particular, must have the space to create and perform.  That it is just as vital to …more…

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

On March 14th, I had the rare privilege to see a professional dance company do a studio rehearsal.  This was two days before the company debuted “Square None”, a new work choreographed by Norbert De La Cruz III.  Aside from the wonderful opera-meets-electronic remixed music, and Austin Scarlett (of Project Runway fame) baroque inspired costumes, the rehearsal showed each of the dancers moving freely throughout the piece and dancing with major …more…

Warehouse 21: Youth Artists in Santa Fe

You: are under 21, living in or traveling through Santa Fe, and are creative. Your parents: could really use some down time, wanna know their kid is safe/productive/engaged. Your pockets: have some lonely dollars, but just enough to get by. ...more...

Axle Contemporary (Santa Fe Gallery on Wheels)

Axle is what happens when you remix the art gallery concept and create an experience that is approachable to the masses.  Instead of ice cream treats and crazy melodies being streamed from a scratchy blow horn, you get a mobile exhibition space filled with contemporary art, rolling through the streets of Santa Fe.  The accessibility of art (it comes to you) without the artsy fartsy attitude (often times exhibits can be …more…

Run Away with the Circus: Wise Fool

Admit it, you always wanted to run away with the circus.  So here’s your chance to make your every circus wish come true, even if just for one day, one class, or one season.

For those lucky enough to score tickets on New Year’s Eve, audience members were able to revel in the circus arts acts while helping Wise Fool raise the rent, under the big tent.  Missed the Holiday Cabaret??? …more…

CCA Cinematheque

You know how film festivals keep popping up all over the place?  Yeah…neither do I, and that probably goes for many other Santa Feans.  That being said, there is the most delicious (yes, this is a fitting adjective for the feast on revolving display at either of the two screens in the Cinematheque) array of independent film offerings every week.

The Cinematheque reminds me of art house theaters in bigger cities …more…
