Jean Paul Gaultier at the Dallas Museum of Art

On November 13th, an exhibit entitled The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opened to the public at the Dallas Museum of Art.  This is the first time an exhibition honoring the designs and influence of Jean Paul Gaultier has been presented.  This is also the first time that the DMA has hosted an exhibit in which the art of fashion is explored.  It is truly an honor for the city of Dallas to be able to host this stunning collection as it is one of only two U.S. stops that the exhibit is making before heading overseas.

In this collection you will find six different sections.  These sections are titled, “The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier”, “The Boudoir”, “Skin Deep”, “Punk Cancan”, “Urban Jungle” and “Metropolis”. All of these sections are thematic displays of his artistic phases and explore Gaultier’s fashion evolution from the 1970’s to modern day.

In addition to these sections (which feature 130 different outfits), there are also sketches, costumes, film excerpts and televised interviews which will all serve to give the viewer a greater insight into how the influential fashion giant has evolved from the streets of Paris to the runways of today.  Also on loan from many artists and photographers is a sizable display of fashion photography.

Something else to entertain the onlookers is a fun audio-visual element to the atmosphere.  There are  30 animated mannequins including one of Gaultier himself adding commentary.
The exhibit runs through February 12th of 2012 and tickets are on sale now at the Dallas Museum of Art or online at dallasmuseumofart.org.
