Body Awareness

Island City Stage and Empire Stage announce their co-production of the play Body Awareness by Annie Baker March 9 – April 7, 2013. Its original production ran from May 28 to June 22, 2008 at the Atlantic Theater Company.  The production received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Play, Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play (Peter Friedman), and an Outer Critics Circle Award, John Gassner Award nomination.

As described by Nelson Pressley of The Washington Post, Body Awareness  “Take a Vermont lesbian couple – Joyce, a high school cultural studies teacher, and Phyllis, a feminist academic — and their 21- year-old son, Jared, who may have Asperger’s and who trawls the naughty stuff on the Internet.   Add an extremely macho visiting artist named Frank Bonitatibus who photographs nude women and girls. Combine during a consciousness-raising “Body Awareness” week on Phyllis’s progressive campus (Shirley State College). Stir gently”.

This third production in the Island City Stage/Empire Stage Season will be directed by Island City Stage’s Associate Artistic Director Michael Leeds. Island City Stage and Empire Stage were recently nominated for a Carbonell Award for best ensemble for their inaugural production of The Twentieth Century Way. Island City Stage was also chosen as one of the Best of 2012 by SFGN newspaper.

Body Awareness will be performed at Empire Stage, located at 1140 N. Flagler Dr., in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The official opening is set for March 9, 2013 and the play will run Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm, and Sundays at 5:00pm, through April 7. The ticket price is $30.00.
