Secrets of the Trade

Island City Stage continues it’s second season of producing provocative LGBT-focused work with the South Florida premiere of Jonathan Tolins’ Off-Broadway dramedy Secrets of the Trade.  The play tells the story of a smart, ambitious kid who dreams of a career on Broadway; and hopes that his idol, a theater legend, can give it to him. Will a door to success be opened for him, or will their complicated relationship force him to question a life in the theater and his relationship with his family? From the celebrated playwright of The Twilight of the GoldsThe Last Sunday in June and the current Off-Broadway smash hit Buyer and Cellar, Jonathan Tolins’ Secrets of the Trade is a bittersweet and biting valentine to the theatre.

Island City Stage just received its second consecutive Silver Palm Award for their Outstanding LGBT production of Shorts Gone Wild, co-produced with Miami’s City Theatre. The series of original 10-minute plays, written largely by local playwrights, was so successful that both companies have agreed to make it an annual summer event.  This production will be directed by Island City Stage Artistic Director Andy Rogow and features Bill Schwartz, Alexander Zenoz, Niki Fridh, Peter Librach and Larry Buzzeo.  The resident Island City Stage production team includes scenic designer Michael McClain, costume designer Peter Lovello, sound designer David Hart and lighting designer Preston Bircher.

Secrets of the Trade begins previews January 9, 2014, opens January 11 and runs through Februay 9.  Performances are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 5:00 PM atEmpire Stage, 1140 N.
