In what may be a first for South Florida Theatre, South Florida audiences will have a rare opportunity to see the production that earned six 2013 Carbonell Awards including Best Production of a Play, Best Actor in a Play, Best Director, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.  

Island City Stage and West Boca Theatre Company are partnering to revive Dan Clancy’s The Timekeepers, with the original cast, director and design team all returning to recreate this powerful play.   Performances run Dec. 3- 21, 2014 at West Boca Theatre Company at the Levis JCC, 21050 95th Ave South, Boca Raton.  Tickets may be ordered online at www.Levisjcc.org/boxoffice  or by calling 561-558-2512. 

Directed by Island City Stage Associate Artistic Director Michael Leeds, this is a gripping story of an introverted Jewish prisoner who keeps himself alive by repairing watches in Sachsenshausen concentration camp, and an extroverted gay hustler willing to do whatever it takes to survive.  Both men find they have knowledge that can help the other, and a love of opera brings them together as they prepare for a visit from the Red Cross that they hope will save them.  However, their underlying anti–Semitism and anti-gay prejudices threaten the partnership and a fitting operatic ending allows their humanity to triumph over evil. 

Playwright Dan Clancy is a part time resident of Ft. Lauderdale. His play Proposition 8, was among the first works chosen for Jan McArt’s New Play Reading Series at Lynn University two seasons ago.  His plays have appeared Off-Broadway and in American and European regional theatres.  In addition to its Off-Broadway run, The Timekeepers has been seen in 14 countries and translated into French, German and Hebrew.  A documentary about the play’s history in Israel, where it has played throughout the country for 10 years, is scheduled to open in Tel Aviv at the end of this year. Clancy’s other plays include Volunteer Man (Obie Award, GLAAD nomination for Best Play); Two Sisters (Joseph Kesselring Playwriting Award); the musicals The First Time and 108 Waverly Place (music by Lynn Portas), the latter of which played in New York, Chicago and Palm Springs.  His musical The Perfect Day (music and lyrics by Julie Gold) has been optioned for an animated movie. 

West Boca Theatre Company Executive Producer Myrna Loman saw the production early in its run last November. “I was just floored by the emotional impact of the production. It stayed with me for days. I knew that this play had to be seen by a wider audience, especially those living in Palm Beach County. I immediately approached (Island City Stage Artistic Director) Andy Rogow about co-producing it in Boca Raton and he said yes almost before I could finish asking him about it!”
