I find hybrids endlessly compelling. And when you really stop to think about the origins of jazz, combining it with African traditions seems like an exceptionally easy match. Every Friday at Zinc Bar in the Village is African Jazz night and I would be willing to bet that the clubs who have a recurring night of African Jazz are few and far between.
This Friday, April 13th, world musician Kaïssa will take the stage at Zinc. Hailing from Cameroon, Kaïssa has performed with Paul Simon, David Byrne, Diana Ross and a number of world-famous African musicians. With her group of superb musicians, the vibrant performer brings something that feels both new and oddly familiar when filtered through the setting of a basement jazz club.
Kaïssa performs three sets this Friday night at 9:30 pm, 11 pm, and 12:30 am. $10/two-drink minimum.
