What is there to say about Nellie McKay? Mostly just that as soon as you try to define what it is that she actually does, she goes and does something so out of left field that you’re left bereft of descriptive ability.

I was first introduced to the never-to-be-pigeonholed Ms. McKay by a marvelous professor back in my wee music student days. Her pure tone and wonderfully taffy-like delivery immediately had my attention. And now she’s got it again, albeit mostly from pure wonder and confusion.

According to the Feinstein’s at Loews Regency website: “To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic book Silent Spring – the first major expose of pesticides in the environment – McKay has put together a special show about its author Rachel Carson, the trailblazing environmentalist. Joined by a four piece band, McKay will tell her story using music by Charles Mingus, Irving Berlin, Dave Frishberg, Hoagy Carmichael, Neil Young and more.”

I doubt I could come up with something such a bizarrely wonderful concept for a show if I tried. “SILENT SPRING – IT’S NOT NICE TO FOOL MOTHER NATURE” runs from March 20th – March 31st. Tickets are, in true Feinstein’s fashion, somewhat above “budget pricing,” but, and I think you’ll agree, this one might just be worth it to see how the heck Nellie will pull this one off.
