Open Walls is a new outdoor mural project in Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment district. Street artists from all over the world are painting 20 murals this spring and they hope to be done in time for the Final Friday event on May 25, 2012. Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Art kicks off Spring with an event-filled month. The Museum begins April with an outdoor film event on April 5th followed by a tribute to Pinot Noirs at April’s Wine Tasting on the 13th.

Each year in March, Loyola University Maryland presents another speaker in the Jerome S. Cardin Memorial Lecture series, “The Art of Dialogue: Jewish Christian Relations in a Post-Shoah World”. The New Britain Museum of American Art holds one of the most fascinating collections of American art in the country. Located on Lexington Street in New Britain, the museum has free parking for guests as well as free admission every Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. For Wayne White, Pee-wee’s Playhouse was just the beginning. As a designer and the voice of several characters on the show, White became practiced at the art the of the anthropomorphic and slightly subversive. If you are of a certain age, you probably recall the slightly surreal slant of this Saturday morning classic that became a cult hit. I visited the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas on the KU campus this week. Since two of the galleries were closed for installation, the entire museum took only an hour to see. Contemporary art addressing recent issues and creating a space for activism was an odd fit with the 17th and 18th century European religious art on the first floor. The second floor galleries were also an odd, yet intriguing mixture of periods and styles: contemporary Native American art, European Medieval and Renaissance painting, and Asian woodblocks, ceramics, screens and statues. ...more...

It’s the month of Zoe Strauss at the PMA. Or should I say months? Her 10 Year retrospective is on view now and has received much critical acclaim. (I heard even Joe Biden took a break from his vice presidential duties to come see it.) She’s throwing dance parties in the museum and sitting for office hours to meet viewers. “Dandy Lion: Articulating a Re(de)fined Black Masculine Identity” is a show consisting of photographs and films featuring well dressed African American men. “Black Dandyism” is a style that combines African influence with European fashion. Curators at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum developed this show in response to concerns about the one sided images of black masculinity as shown through dress. Modern black dandyism developed as a reaction to young black me who wear informal styles such as baggy pants with boxer shorts showing.
