Volunteer Opportunities

How’s that New Year’s resolution to get more involved in Austin’s theater scene going? If you’re already falling behind, take note of these opportunities:

City Theater’s website says there’s always a need for help at the concessions and box office, and with scenery and costume construction, stage crew, and much more. Get in touch with them at (512) 524-2870 or send an email to info AT citytheatreaustin.org.

Zach Theatre has volunteer opportunities for administrative staff, greeters, ticket takers, ushers, special event assistants, and more. A two-part training for new volunteers will be held at Zach’s Whisenhunt Arena, 1510 Toomey Road on Monday, Feb. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the same time and place on Monday, Feb. 20. Attendance at both sessions is required. Email Volunteer Coordinator Allison Jaynes — ajaynes AT zachtheatre.org — for details. If you can’t make the training, fill out the online form to be a ZACH volunteer here.

Along with the more traditional theater volunteer experiences, such as ushering, carpentry, and administrative tasks, Hyde Park Theatre is hoping someone will lend a hand to beautify the space indoors and out by helping to decorate the lobby and do some gardening. Email Kathy AT hydeparktheatre.org for more information.

Vortex Theatre needs help in the front of the house and behind the scenes. Give them a holler at (512) 478-5282 or email vortex AT vortexrep.org.

There are many more opportunities than are listed here — did you really think I was going to do all the legwork for you? Contact the folks at your favorite theater and let them know you’re willing to pitch in. Most theaters can use an extra (stage)hand now and then. Don’t just sit there and watch the shows…get involved, and let the actors applaud you for a change!
