Recently moved to a new expanded location in downtown Jackson, the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) has a mission to actively engage its community in the arts. The MMA traces its origins back to 1903, when local artist and educator Bessie Cary Lemly organized an Art Study Club to foster appreciation for the arts in Jackson. Billed as Mississippi’s only not-for-profit professional theatre, New Stage was founded in 1965. The company produces contemporary plays as well as the classics. New works in development are presented through the Eudora Welty New Play Series, named for the distinguished author who helped found New Stage.
The company offers five productions each year in its subscription series, in addition to a Christmas show, an annual student matinee, and a kids-only show …more…
The Mississippi Chorus began with a call for singers to augment Crossgates United Methodist Church’s 1989 performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” The overwhelming response precipitated the creation of a community choir that would eventually become today’s ensemble. The Chorus frequently appears as a guest ensemble with the Mississippi Symphony and performs its own concerts of choral masterworks and new pieces, as well as the occasional popular song. Founded in 1944, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra sprang from a deep passion for music that continues to ring through Jackson, MS. Today the ensemble performs over 120 concerts around the state, reaching 75,000 Mississippians each year. Concerts series include the “Bravo” Series, featuring masterworks with world-class soloists; a Pops series and a popular Chamber series, which takes place in venues around the Jackson area. MSO currently supports three youth orchestras …more…
Mississippi Opera performs in various venues in Jackson. The company has its roots in the Jackson Opera Guild, which was organized in 1945. During the 1970s, that group changed its name to the Mississippi Opera Association and, later, the Mississippi Opera Guild.
